Harassement

Samantha is perky this morning; it's her first day on the job and she's determined to make a good impression.

Arriving early, she waits in the lobby. Her first colleagues arrive, including Melissa, the company messenger. She knows everything about everyone, and the company holds no secrets from her. Melissa is an unambitious young woman, content with her lot in life.

Samantha always wondered why the person she was replacing had left. But she was about to find out.

Her office was next to Greg's, and as his assistant, Samantha knew she'd be spending most of her time at work. Which would sometimes include weekends.

Samantha was beginning to have new routines, but what didn't change was her daily early-morning walk along the cliff. Sometimes she would see the sun rise. She watched the sea glisten, often calm, almost oily and sometimes turbulent. When the water was clear, she could see all kinds of fish, large and small.

Over the next few days, Samantha worked on an important project for her boss. It was late, but she wanted to finish some elements. Greg approached and stood behind her, watching her computer screen, pretending to be able to pass on any changes to her as she typed. Samantha felt his body against her back, she was very embarrassed by the situation. She moved her seat forward so that he wouldn't touch her.  Her work done, she hurried home.

Samantha asked Melissa, who had become her confidante, about the former assistant. She replied that the only thing she could advise her to do was to watch out for Greg. Indeed, he was always brushing up against her, or touching her apologetically. Samantha much preferred working with Greg's brother and business partner. James, who was respectful and very professional.

That morning, Samantha prepared herself a small chicken, salad and tomato sandwich. It was going to be a long day, so she might not have time for lunch. She sat down, facing the sea, to eat her snack. A passing jogger, distracted by his phone, jostled Samantha. The bread ended up in the water and was quickly gobbled up by the fish. A little annoyed, she got ready for work.

It was the day of the project presentation, and Samantha was just wrapping up the presentation when Greg reminded her that her presence was required that evening. She would have to take care of the technical side of things and take notes in front of the guests, important business leaders invited for the occasion. Arriving at the restaurant, Samantha was embarrassed by all the compliments Greg was paying her. She could feel his gaze on her. When the evening was over, she ordered a cab home. Greg immediately canceled the cab so he could take her home personally. Arriving in front of her apartment building, Greg tried to kiss her, but Samantha dodged and left in a hurry. Her heart was beating a hundred miles an hour, she was torn between fear and disgust.

She couldn't afford to lose her job. The next day was a heavy one. She avoided Greg as much as possible. When James questioned her, Samantha pretended she was tired.

With the weekend fast approaching, Samantha called Melissa to ask her to join her for a starlit picnic on Sunday evening. She said she knew of a quiet, secluded spot on the cliff. Greg eavesdropped on the conversation. Unfortunately, Melissa had a long-planned family day, so she apologized for not being able to accompany him. Samantha offered to meet her there late if possible.

After a trying week, Samantha was delighted to finally arrive for the weekend. She arrived just as the sun was setting. She admired the magnificent scenery and seemed at peace with herself. She set up her tablecloth, then laid out all the dishes she had prepared for the occasion. As the stars began to come out, she heard footsteps behind her. Perhaps Melissa had freed herself after all!
Turning around, she saw Greg, all smiles, a bottle of wine in his hand. He confided in her that he had overheard her conversation with Melissa and didn't want her to be alone that evening. Anxiety returned to Samantha's mind. She stood up to tell him she didn't want his company. But he came closer and closer. One more step and she'd have fallen more than 20 meters. Just as Greg took advantage of the situation by stepping forward, mouth agape, eyes closed, ready to embrace the horrified Samantha, she took a big step to her left. Greg toppled over and fell off the cliff. Samantha turned around in shock. She saw a frenzy of activity in the water, illuminated by the full moon. After a few minutes, several fins sank into the sea. Samantha sat up, staring into space. A shower of shooting stars crossed overhead.
